The Gods Reformed: Hades & Pluto

Hades, as the ruler of the Underworld and the lord of the dead, was not spoken of in loud tones by the ancient Greeks. When circumstances required he be mentioned, the epitaph “the wealthy one” was used. As such, our Hades had to be seen as a mysterious presence This was accomplished through the dark hues of blue on his skin and togo, his closed eyes and his raised head. He does not care who has died or why. All that matters is that you are now his subject and there, you will remain. Not even Sisyphus, one of the cleverest of mortals, could escape.

An emphasis was also put on cold. Not only are the deceased deprived of warmth but Hades brought winter every year when he carried Demeter’s daughter down to his side. His scepter is an ice crystal and Pluto’s skin is ice white mixed with red frost bite burns. The stars and their spaces above the planet reemphasize this point but also give a glimmer of hope, reminding us of the lives of all who have passed before us.
